The max min thermometer is the nickname for maximum minimum thermometer which is also originally known as Six’s thermometer, after its inventor James Six. The max min thermometer measures the highest and lowest temperatures during a certain time period. The purpose of max min thermometers is best benefited in the fields of horticulture and meteorology among others. Gardeners would want to monitor very low temperatures, using a max min thermometer, during the cold months so as to be forewarned of frosts that can be a problem to their gardens or greenhouses.

The original max min thermometer, like many others today, contain mercury. However, several countries have banned the use of thermometers containing mercury as it can be a health hazard, once the thermometer breaks or is not discarded properly. Electronic and bi-metal variants are now available to substitute for the mercury-containing max min thermometer and other types of thermometers for that matter.

Thermometer Min-Max Magnet by Sper Scientific

This 11-by-2.5-by 1-inch max min thermometer has dual scales and provides readings with these ranges: -50/50 degrees Centigrade and -60/120 degrees Fahrenheit. It is useful in weather stations, construction, cold storage rooms, industry or can be used anywhere indoor or outdoor that necessitates information on maximum and minimum temperatures. Two mercury columns thrust tiny floats to each temperature extreme and remain in that position until max min thermometer is reset with the attached magnet. A five-year warranty covers this max min thermometer.

Taylor Precision Products Max/Min Thermometer 5458P

Along with the current temperature, this Taylor Precision max min thermometer records both high and low readings from the previous setting, and can be retuned using its magnet reset.  It has a “U”-shaped tube containing a clear liquid and columns of mercury. When there is an increase in temperature, the clear liquid in the sensing bulb swells pushing the mercury up the maximum scale. As the temperature goes down, the liquid shrinks and the mercury tags along back up the minimum scale. The maximum and minimum temperature readings are indicated at the bottom point of the limit markers that are pushed to the temperature extremes by the two sides of the mercury column and are kept in place by a magnet at the back of the case. Reading ranges from -40 degrees to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This max min thermometer is housed in a plastic molded case.

Mercury Free Max Min Thermometer

This max min thermometer has a traditional design with no mercury content. It gives temperature readings of both degrees centigrade and degrees Fahrenheit, and can be reset by simply pressing a button. It is recommended for gardeners to use in gardens and greenhouses to check minimum temperatures during cold season when frost can pose trouble and maximum temperatures during the daytime.
